A federal judge has rejected Apple Inc.(NASDAQ:AAPL)’s demand to increase the damages that a jury had ordered Samsung Electronics Inc. to pay.
U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh also rejected demands from both companies for another trial on other issues, while upholding the validity of the Apple patents.
In August, a jury had found that Samsung had “infringed” on six Apple patents and had ordered the Korean company to pay $1.05 billion to the iPad maker. The jury had also found that many older Samsung products hadn’t violated Apple’s patents.
The judge had also refused to block sales of certain Samsung products as Apple had failed to show that the sales of those devices were being driven by Apple’s technology. Meanwhile, Samsung’s contention is that that only three of the 26 older-generation products are still sold in the United Sates.
Also, Apple has filed a new lawsuit claiming that Samsung’s current products are also using its technology.
The judge has refused a new trial saying, “Accordingly, the trial was fairly conducted, with uniform time limits and rules of evidence applied to both sides,” and “A new trial would be contrary to the interests of justice.”
The judge is still considering Samsung’s plea to reduce the $1.05 billion award, which it claimed was wrongly calculated.
While Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet refused to comment, the Samsung spokesperson hadn’t responded until late yesterday.
